Have You Seen What’s New in Variance, Monographs, and E-Forum?

In 2025, the CAS has been busy publishing important works that advance the field of actuarial science. But if you haven’t been keeping track, here is a quick roundup of things to check out.
Variance
Variance is the peer-reviewed journal of the CAS. In 2025, Variance began continuously publishing rather than holding articles for separate issues released twice annually. So now whenever you head over to variancejournal.org, you’ll see the latest research published online.
Issue 18 features 16 articles so far, ranging from pricing cyber risk to marijuana legislation to crop insurance indemnities.
Interested in helping out? Become a peer reviewer! If you’d like to be a part of the future of actuarial science, please consider becoming a peer reviewer for Variance. Reviewers read submissions in their area of expertise and evaluate whether a paper should be published in Variance. No previous experience is required to join this exciting volunteer role. You can volunteer for the role in the CAS Portal.
Monographs
The knowledge within CAS Monographs continues to be foundational to the field of P&C actuarial science, as their content is frequently included in the syllabi of several CAS Exams.
There are two new open calls for monographs in 2025:
If you or a colleague is an expert in either of these fields, consider submitting a proposal and be a part of the curriculum that defines the P&C field.
E-Forum
E-Forum continues to feature the best research from CAS meetings and provide a platform for sharing new ideas in P&C actuarial science. Recent papers include:
- Agent-Based Modeling: Introduction and Actuarial Applications (Ratemaking Call Paper)
- Enhancing Actuarial Ratemaking with Synthetic Data for Privacy Preservation (Ratemaking Call Paper)
- Claim Counts Prediction Using Individual Data with ReSurv (Reserving Call Paper)
E-Forum is also looking for volunteers to help read papers. If this is of interest to you, send an email to Greg Guthrie, CAS Managing Editor.
Working Papers
Did you know the CAS fosters collaboration, engagement, and discussion of ideas by publishing works in progress? These are called Working Papers.
In July, the newest Working Paper was posted online: “Insuring Vehicles as They Transition From Human-Driven to Autonomous.” Check it out at the Working Papers section of the CAS website.
Because Working Papers are works in progress, their content is not endorsed, approved, certified, or warranted by the CAS. Users must click the disclaimer button at the bottom of the page to access the papers.
The CAS continues to publish relevant material for working actuaries. Be sure to follow the CAS on LinkedIn to keep abreast of the newest releases.
