As actuaries, we are members of a distinguished and respected profession spanning hundreds of years. Throughout our history we have been subject to changing technology. From the slide rule to the calculator, the minicomputer to the PC, we have adapted and evolved.
I believe the crossroads at which we now stand may create the most transformational change since the advent of mechanical computation. Large language models, machine learning, agentic AI, however we call them, have quickly evolved from being fun toys to significant factors in industry. As we have done in the past, we must continue to evolve the actuarial profession—both its education and its perception—to not only remain relevant but to continue our purpose in helping to understand, educate, and manage financial risk.
I have been fortunate to have seen the governance of the CAS up close. I spent two years on the nominating committee and later served three years on the Executive Council as Vice President of Research and Development. My strongest takeaway from those years is the passion our volunteer leaders bring to making the CAS be the absolute best it can be for its members. Of course, there was often disagreement on precisely what was best. The vigorous yet respectful debates allowed for opinions to be shared and convincing arguments to be made.
I have a lot of gratitude to the CAS as an organization—and to its members in particular—for giving me a profession I truly enjoy. I very much want this opportunity to continue to be available to anyone with the desire and the capability. This is why I am running for the board. Given the uncertainty—and thus the opportunity—facing us now, I want to follow in the footsteps of those many actuaries from whom I have learned, and help guide the CAS to a path to continued success for many decades to come.
