Actuarial Science Never Stops: 2026 Midyear Digest of CAS Research & Publications

The first half of 2026 brought a wide range of new CAS research and publications addressing some of the most active questions in property and casualty actuarial practice, from artificial intelligence and climate risk to pricing, reserving, capital modeling, cyber risk and more.

CAS Forum

Starting in 2026, CAS-funded Research Papers are published in the CAS Forum, formerly the E-Forum. The CAS Forum is also expanding as a repository for current and historical CAS research, including past issues of CAS Forum and CAS E-Forum, Discussion Papers, and the Proceedings of the Casualty Actuarial Society.

The CAS AI Primer

The CAS also released The CAS AI Primer: Practical Guidance for Actuaries, a practitioner-focused resource designed to help actuaries understand and responsibly use artificial intelligence in actuarial work. Designed as a living resource that will evolve alongside the technology, the Primer has already been updated with a second edition. 

CAS Monographs

The CAS published two new additions to its monograph series:

From GLMs to Comprehensive Insurance Pricing: Techniques and Challenges

Actuarial Review

Across its first three issues in 2026, Actuarial Review explored artificial intelligence, climate and catastrophe risk, flood insurance, cyber events, insurance market conditions, professionalism and emerging regulatory issues.

The year also brought a new digital format for the CAS flagship magazine, designed to provide a more modern and mobile-friendly reading experience. Archived issues are still accessible on the previous Actuarial Review website.

Looking Ahead: 2026 Individual Research Grants

The CAS also announced nine 2026 Individual Research Grant projects in March, supporting future research across AI, machine learning, ratemaking, reserving, catastrophe risk, telematics and cyber risk. 

Topics under development include transformer neural networks for multivariate loss reserving, AI-enhanced disaster response, machine learning for fraud detection, telematics-based automotive risk assessment and LLM-enhanced cyber risk pricing. 

These projects will add to a growing pipeline of CAS-supported research in the months and years ahead. 

Together, the work published and supported during the first half of 2026 reflects the CAS community's continued focus on research that is both technically rigorous and practically useful, helping actuaries respond to a rapidly changing risk environment.
