CAS Marketing and Communication Efforts Recognized with 12 Industry Awards

The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) has received 12 awards across three association award programs for exemplary work completed in 2021. The three programs include the EXCEL Awards, TRENDY Awards and Communicator Awards.

CAS CEO Victor Carter-Bey said, "The CAS is exceptionally proud to be recognized for our dedication, creativity and innovation in the field by receiving these 12 industry awards."

Student Central Summer Program

The summer of 2021 marked the second successful year of the Student Central Summer Program. The CAS Staff and volunteers ran this eight-week-long program that covered a variety of actuarial skills and offered a mentoring component from 72 seasoned actuaries. Out of 399 applicants, 246 were admitted into the mentor-led program and the 175 remaining applicants were offered an independent-study version of the program. The class of 246 students were organized into 35 cohorts that met weekly and represented 17 countries and represented 153 universities. The scope of this program included: 20 webinar presentations, 12 mock interviews, nine “Ask an Actuary” panelists, and 18 case competition judges.

CAS Spotlight on Diversity Infographics

As part of the CAS Strategic Approach to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I), the CAS committed to setting concrete goals and maintaining transparency and accountability on progress on our DE&I initiatives. To this end, we built a set of detailed demographic metrics for CAS members and candidates, designed to help us understand the current state of diversity in the CAS, set goals, and track changes over time.

CAS Foundations of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Series Mini-Training on Race/Gender/Meritocracy

In part one of the two-part video series, Mallika Bender, FCAS, MAAA, CAS Diversity Equity & Inclusion (DE&I) Staff Actuary presented to CAS members and leaders about the issues underlying diversity efforts and tactics with the goal of deepening their understanding and clearing up common misconceptions.

Actuaries in Community Social Media Campaign

In June of 2021, we launched the Actuaries Community Campaign where we highlighted CAS members and community on our LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter platforms using the hashtag #ActuariesinCOMMUNITY. We highlighted partner organizations enhancing the actuarial field, peer-submitted features of actuaries’ civic excellence, and personal profiles of our members. This campaign’s purpose is to showcase the diverse ways in which actuaries are often involved in acts of service for their communities, be it actuarially related or not and sought to highlight our members’ community service outside of the workplace.

President’s Message Series 2021

In March of 2021, the CAS launched a new video series on the CAS YouTube Channel with corresponding articles in our magazine, the Actuarial Review (AR). In the series, former CAS President Jessica Leong interviewed six distinguished actuaries who embody the new Envisioned Future for the CAS and is designed for career-minded professionals. These interviews covered topics well beyond the actuarial industry itself including business and technology, career goals, and personal advice from industry CEOs directed at career minded individuals. This video series allows viewers to gain a deeper insight into the careers of our prominent members as well as hear personal anecdotes that make the career more relatable and approachable to a wider audience.

National Hispanic Heritage Month (NHHM) Social Media Campaign 2021

This past September, the CAS ran its first ever National Hispanic Heritage Month campaign. National Hispanic Heritage Month is a month commemorating and encouraging the study, observance, and celebration of Hispanic independence and the CAS wanted to honor the month and feature Hispanic members who we may have not highlighted on our channels before. The CAS ran the “NHHMxCAS” campaign from September 15- October 15 to showcase exceptional Hispanic actuaries in a variety of creative ways. During the month we shared special features on our social media platforms using the hashtag #NHHMxCAS. To wrap up the month, we told the personal story of one our Hispanic members about her journey to become an actuary on the CAS Roundtable Blog.

Individual-Infographic for Branded Content "CAS Career and Workplace Survey Infographic”

In 2021, we surveyed members of CAS Student Central, the CAS’s membership program for university students, to provide insight into virtual recruitment practices. The survey, released in infographic form, provides key information for actuarial hiring managers, candidate program coordinators, and recruiters about the career preferences for the actuarial talent pipeline. The survey pulls on responses from 362 participants from 105 universities and covers a variety of recruitment topics, including recruitment in a virtual world, what students are seeking from employers in the current environment, and more.

CAS Website Redesign

After more than a year of development, the new CAS website offered our members, candidates and other stakeholders a better user experience across a wide range of features. Redesigning and launching the new website involved a team of 40 volunteers, from candidates to members, who shared their perspectives and provided feedback through the project.
