I want to bring my enthusiasm for professional development, my innovative ideas, and passion for diversity to the CAS Board in working to achieve the CAS Strategic Plan goals. I have been a passionate CAS volunteer ever since I received my credentials and I bring my years of experience as a volunteer and volunteer chair to the CAS Board.
I am enthusiastic about professional development having been the Volunteer Chair for the Spring Meeting and now the Volunteer Chair for the Leadership Courses task force of the Leadership Development Working Group (LDWG). I was also active at the regional level as a board member of CANE (Casualty Actuaries of New England). As Volunteer Chair for the Spring Meeting, I consistently looked for ways to innovate the Spring Meeting such as showing a relevant movie followed by a discussion with the filmmakers. Through the LDWG, we have been working on the Strategic Plan initiative of Building Skills for the Future with the leadership development book club as well as offering webinars focused on leadership skills. These events that bring CAS leaders together have fostered discussion and added networking options, especially for those in remote locations. Adding more engagement opportunities like these are what I would like to achieve as a board member. At the regional level, having moved to the Richmond area, I miss the professional development opportunities that were offered through a large regional network like CANE. I would like to investigate ways that these professional development opportunities could be expanded into regions that are smaller but have a growing actuarial population, especially as there are more hybrid work options.
I am also passionate about diversity, equity, and inclusion having been on the leadership team of WIAA (Women in Actuarial and Analytics) at Travelers as well as the leadership team of NAWA (Network of Actuarial Women and Allies). Currently I serve on the leadership team of NCCI’s Inclusion and Diversity Employee Resource Group (TAO – Together as One). I believe that as we continue to grow as an organization it is important to bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas along with reaching out to students in underserved and underrepresented areas to diversify our pipeline. I fortunately had access to an actuarial program and a family friend that fostered my career development, but not everyone has the same opportunities. I would like to work on additional ways that we can reach out to promising students and expose them to a career as a P&C actuary.
