Why do you want to serve on the CAS Board of Directors?

I am honored to be nominated as a candidate for the CAS Board of Directors. My primary motivations to serve includes:

  1. Actuarial science and my membership in the CAS since 1996 have been the foundational bedrock for the entirety of my career in the insurance industry.
  2. I am a natural servant leader in the spirit of Robert H. Greenleaf – for the greater good of our members and the broader professional services we provide to society.
  3. Responsibility of the board is not to respond to what is happening today, but rather preparing for the future. I have spent 33 years in this career looking to the future and would be honored to apply this expertise to the CAS.
  4. I will always be listening to all voices to hear the collective wisdom for leadership of the CAS. An early mentor taught me that the best answer should always win, and true leaders must have the humility to recognize that we don’t always know the best answer.
Candidate Issue(s) Identification and Discussion

I am standing for election to the CAS Board of Directors to serve – not with an agenda on any pre-set list of issues. In my leadership roles at the Insurance Information Institute and Insurance Research Council, I routinely speak with consumers, the media, and policymakers to educate and inform on actuarial and insurance issues from a non-partisan perspective. This has made me keenly aware of our professional responsibilities to the whole of society – the individuals and communities for whom we serve. If elected, I would always have this obligation in the forefront of my mind.

In a world where we spend a significant portion of our work day and personal time in the digital world, my perspective on issues will be shaped by my broader experiences.

  • My undergraduate education was at a liberal arts institution where I studied the humanities to complement my two technical majors.
  • My personal reading list includes the Smithsonian magazine and non-fiction books to learn about topics outside our profession.
  • I believe the commonality of being human is our search for meaning. I have used my personal faith traditions in that quest and affirm the value of the human spirit, irrespective of denomination or creed.
  • I am a patron of the arts and participate in a wide range of art forms to enrich both halves of my brain, including singing in church choirs for many years.

Our profession society is founded on applying actuarial expertise and data-driven insights to a broad range of organizations. As we do so, I believe it is essential to ensure we leave the entirety of society in a stronger and more just state of being. This includes the responsible use data and advanced analytics like AI, as well as transparency with the consumers we serve every day. I love what I do because it brings the full breadth of who I am to achieve the responsibilities.
