CAS Showcases Research and Thought Leadership at the 61st Actuarial Research Conference

The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) had a strong presence at the 61st Actuarial Research Conference (ARC), held July 21-24 at The Ohio State University. As a Platinum Sponsor, the CAS showcased its commitment to advancing actuarial science through research presentations, thought leadership, and engagement with the actuarial research community.

Led by six presentations featuring CAS-sponsored research, the Society highlighted work spanning artificial intelligence, cyber risk, casualty catastrophe modeling, social inflation, and fairness in insurance pricing. The conference also provided opportunities for CAS leadership to share perspectives on the CAS’s support of researchers and the future of AI in the actuarial profession.

CAS Leadership at ARC

CAS Vice President of Research and Practice Advancement Morgan Bugbee participated in the plenary panel, "Actuarial Research Funding Landscapes: Opportunities and Guidance," alongside representatives from the Society of Actuaries and the American Academy of Actuaries. The panel explored current research funding opportunities, proposal priorities, and strategies for developing competitive research applications, providing practical guidance for faculty, students, and researchers seeking actuarial research support.

Bugbee also delivered a keynote luncheon presentation on artificial intelligence, discussing the evolving role of AI in actuarial research and practice.

Research Award Recognition

During the conference, CAS-supported researcher Olivier Côté received the 2026 American Academy of Actuaries Award for Research for his work on A Scalable Toolbox for Exposing Indirect Discrimination in Insurance Rates, published in the CAS Research Paper Series on Bias and Insurance. Côté was honored for advancing actuarial perspectives on public policy issues through the paper's innovative framework for assessing potential indirect discrimination in insurance pricing.

CAS Research Beyond the Conference

As part of its Platinum Sponsorship, the CAS also contributed a Sponsor Insights article, Three Research Frontiers Shaping the Future of Property & Casualty Risk, highlighting the Society's ongoing investments in climate risk, artificial intelligence, and emerging uncertainty. The article demonstrates how CAS research is helping actuaries better understand and manage increasingly complex property and casualty risks.

The CAS congratulates all of the researchers whose work was featured at ARC and thanks The Ohio State University and the conference organizers for hosting another successful event.
