Reserving Basics is a new introductory course from the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS), the trusted global authority in property and casualty actuarial science. Designed for emerging actuaries and early-career insurance professionals, the course provides a practical introduction to how P&C reserving works from start to finish.

What You’ll Learn

In this practical, guided course, you’ll move beyond individual formulas to see how reserving data, calculations, methods, professional judgment, and communication come together in an actuarial workflow.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Work with common reserving data and loss development triangles
  • Perform foundational reserving calculations and projections to ultimate
  • Apply methods including Chain Ladder, Expected Loss Ratio, Bornhuetter-Ferguson, Cape Cod, and Frequency-Severity
  • Compare methods and understand the assumptions behind them
  • Evaluate results using actuarial judgment and business context

Learn by Doing

Worked examples, exercises, knowledge checks, and Excel activities give you opportunities to put the concepts into practice as you learn.

Course Details

No prior reserving experience is required. The course takes approximately 5–6 hours to complete, and participants who complete all required course content and activities receive a certificate of completion. Up to 7.2 CE credits may be available, subject to each participant’s individual continuing education requirements.
