The Fall 2020 meeting of the Midwestern Actuarial Forum was called to order at 9:00 am on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 via virtual webinar by Ann Chai, President. There were 400 people registered for the webcast.

The meeting started with a welcome from Ann Chai.

The first session was a presentation from Barb Murray - Claims Director, PwC; Francis Pecht - Claims Senior Manager, PwC; Nancy Zaharewicz - Claims Manager, PwC; Dara Green - Claims Senior Associate, PwC; Stella Bleikhman - Claims Senior Associate, PwC. The presentation was titled “Non-COVID-19 Claim Topics to Watch.”

The second session of the morning was presented by Adam Troyer, FCAS, CFA – Senior Reinsurance Actuary, Lockton Re. His presentation was titled “Communicating Uncertainty – An Impossible Task??” and may be found by following this link: https://maf-uncertainty-viz.netlify.app/.

The last morning session was presented by Katie Pipkorn, ACAS, MAAA – Associate Actuary, Milliman; Mindy Steichen, FCAS, MAAA – Principal and Consulting Actuary, Milliman; and Elizabeth Bart, FCAS, MAAA – Consulting Actuary, Milliman. Their presentation was titled “Professionalism: The New Modeling ASOP and a Kahoot! Review of Existing ASOPs.” The presentation was not made available to post.

At 12:00 pm, the first day of the meeting was adjourned.

The second day of the meeting was called into session by Ann Chai, President at 8:00 am on Thursday, October 1, 2020.

The first session of the second day was a presentation from Matthew Gentle, FCAS (he/him) – Actuary, MedPro Group; Kyle Babirad, ACAS, CSPA (he/him) – Actuary, Canary Consulting; Stephen Abrokwah, FSA (he/him) – IABA Director & VP, Actuary & Client Manager, Swiss Re; and Alejandro Ortega, FCAS, CFA (he/him) – Co-Founder, President Elect, Director of Corporate Engagement, Organization of Latino Actuaries. The presentation was titled “Actuarial Inclusion, Equity and Diversity Update.”

Following the first session, the MAF convened the business session. Aaron Hardiek, Treasurer informed the membership that balance sheet remains strong. Melissa Garrison gave the Education Officer’s report, informing the membership about the scholarships to be awarded by the MAF in the fall.

Following the business session, the second session of the second day was presented by William Wilt, FCAS, CFA – President, Assured Research and Alan Zimmermann – Managing Director, Assured Research. The presentation was titled “Social Inflation.”

The third session of the second day was presented by Brian Brown, FCAS MAAA – Principal and Consulting Actuary – Milliman; Rita Zona, ACAS – Commutations and Asbestos Reserving Actuary, Enstar; and Carolyn Fahey – Executive Director, AIRROC. The presentation was titled “Managing Legacy Risks in 2020.”

The final session of the second day was presented by Patrick Gilhool, FCAS, MAAA – VP and Chief Reserving Actuary, Starstone and Rachel Soich, FCAS, MAAA – Consulting Actuary. The session was titled “Professionalism Session.” The presentation was not made available to post.
