New Candidate Support Resources: Exams 8 & 9 Practice Items and Solutions
Continuing our efforts to provide candidates with updated preparation tools, the CAS is pleased to release practice items for CAS Exams 8 and 9. These practice items can be found on the individual exam landing pages as well as the exam resources page.
These downloadable Excel resources are composed of retired questions from recent exam administrations (Spring 2026 for Exam 9 and Fall 2025 for Exam 8) curated by the exam working groups. Each practice item features a question tab and an answer tab; the answer tabs include additional item and answer narratives to better support exam preparation. The practice items follow the enhanced answer format introduced this spring and include the following (with enhancements indicated in bold and with *):
- The item itself
- An example of a full-credit answer*
- A short narrative explaining why the answer earns full credit*
- 1 to 4 common pitfalls or mistakes in responses*
- Total points
- Item type (constructed response, matching, spreadsheet, etc.)
- The domain aligned with the item
- The task(s) aligned with the item
- Reference(s) aligned with the item
- Item origin (retired from an exam vs. developed for practice)*
- Exam administration reference (e.g., Fall 2025)*
- Selection criteria (why was this item chosen? Commonly missed, new content, new item type)*
Additional candidate support tools are expected to be introduced over time, with releases occurring on a rolling basis. Practice items for Exam 6U will be released by the end of 2026 and announced accordingly.
