Second Edition of the CAS AI Primer Now Available

The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) has released the second edition of The CAS AI Primer: Practical Guidance for Actuaries, expanding its guidance to reflect the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence and its applications in actuarial practice.

Designed for actuaries at all stages of AI adoption, the Primer provides practical guidance on the responsible use of AI, with an emphasis on validation, governance, and professional judgment.

The second edition includes:

  • New guidance on customizing AI models for actuarial applications
  • A new section on agentic AI, including how AI agents work, their connection to actuarial workflows, a framework for adoption, and associated risks and best practices
  • Expanded descriptions of leading AI models and their capabilities
  • A new visualization illustrating an AI-enabled reserving workflow

The CAS Artificial Intelligence Working Group will continue to review and update the Primer on a quarterly basis to reflect significant developments in AI and their implications for the actuarial profession.
