The Spring 2021 meeting of the Midwestern Actuarial Forum was called to order at 9:00 am on Thursday, March 4, 2021 via virtual webinar by Ann Chai, President.  There were 450 people registered for the webcast.

The meeting started with a welcome from Ann Chai.

The first session was a presentation from Nate Loughin, ACAS - Director, KPMG and Chris Nyce, FCAS - Principal, KPMG.  The presentation was titled “Microsegmentation - Using Machine Learning to Drive Value.”

The second session of the morning was presented by Ralph Dweck, FCAS – Senior Manager & Actuary, ISO/Verisk and Timothy McCarthy, ACAS - Manager & Assistant Actuary, ISO/VeriskTheir presentation was titled “Social Inflation -- Scenario Testing COVID-19 Assumptions with Predictive Models.

The last morning session was presented by John Gleba, FCAS, MAAA, FCA - Secretary/Treasurer, Madison Consulting Group, Inc. and Rebecca Williams, ACAS - Actuary, North Carolina Rate Bureau. Their presentation was titled “Professionalism and COVID-19.”

At 11:50 pm, the first day of the meeting was adjourned.

The second day of the meeting was called into session by Ann Chai, President at 9:00 am on Friday, March 5, 2021.

The second day began with the business session. Marc Molik assumed the role of MAF President. Melissa Garrison was elected as the MAF Vice President, and Carol Sorenson was elected as the new Education Officer. Aaron Hardiek will remain in the role of Secretary/Treasurer. Melissa Garrison gave the Education Officer’s report. Marc Molik thanked outgoing MAF president for her leadership and service and virtually presented her a plaque commemorating her work on the MAF board.  

Following the business session, the first session of the second day was a presentation from Thomas Kenia, FCAS – Senior Managing Director, Aon Reinsurance Solutions and Jennifer Cavanaugh, PhD – Senior Consultant, Aon Human Capital Consulting.  The presentation was titled “Applicability of Driver Assessments in Commercial Auto Insurance.”

The second session of the second day was presented by Rich Gibson, FCAS – Senior Casualty Fellow, American Academy of Actuaries.  The presentation was titled “P/C Public Policy Update from the Academy.”

The final session of the second day was a panel discussion by Brian Brown, FCAS MAAA – Principal and Consulting Actuary – Milliman; Steve Wilson – Independent Non-Executive Director, AM Best Europe Rating Services; and Dan Ryan – Senior Director, AM Best.  The presentation was titled “ERM and Effective Governance.”  There was no accompanying presentation deck.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:01 pm.
