Introducing the CAS AI Primer: A Practical Guide for Actuaries

The Casualty Actuarial Society is pleased to release The CAS AI Primer: Practical Guidance for Actuaries, a concise, practitioner-focused resource designed to support actuaries in the responsible use of artificial intelligence. The Primer is intended for actuaries who are new to AI as well as those already using AI tools in their work and seeking to strengthen governance, validation, and best practices.

The AI Primer provides:

  • A clear overview of core AI concepts relevant to actuarial work
  • Practical guidance on responsible AI use, including validation, governance, and human-in-the-loop practices
  • Corporate and regulatory considerations that shape real-world AI implementation
  • Curated learning resources for actuaries looking to build deeper AI literacy and practical skills

The CAS AI Primer emphasizes the importance of actuarial judgment in AI-enabled workflows and reinforces the profession’s role in ensuring AI outputs are appropriate, explainable, and aligned with business and regulatory expectations.

“AI is becoming part of everyday actuarial work, whether actuaries are just beginning to explore these tools or are already using them in production environments,” said Shine Wang, FCAS, one of the Primer’s co-authors. “The AI Primer is designed to provide practical guidance on how to apply AI responsibly, with a strong focus on validation, governance, and professional judgment.”

The CAS AI Primer is intended as a starting point rather than a comprehensive rulebook. As AI tools continue to evolve, the CAS will continue to support actuaries through research, education, and professional guidance.

The CAS AI Primer is available on the CAS website.
