The International Association of Black Actuaries Announces New Executive Director

The International Association of Black Actuaries (IABA) is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Tiffany Holmes as Executive Director.

St. Louis – The International Association of Black Actuaries (IABA) has selected Dr. Tiffany Holmes to become its new Executive Director of the nonprofit professional and student member organization, whose mission is to increase the number of successful Black actuaries through programs and partnerships that address their underrepresentation in the profession.  Dr. Holmes looks to bring her wealth of experience to IABA, by continuing to develop its mission and grow the organization to fulfill on its vision of more equitable exposure, access, development and advancement for Black people within the actuarial profession.

The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) and IABA have enjoyed a long-standing strategic partnership in support of IABA’s mission and our shared goals to foster diversity and inclusion in the actuarial profession. CAS and IABA are co-sponsors of a 2018 study to identify barriers to entry into the actuarial profession impacting Black and Latino candidates and the organizations work together to address those barriers, with CAS supporting various IABA activities including scholarships, boot camps, and exam preparation programs. CAS looks forward to working closely with Dr. Holmes on our shared initiatives in the future.

Dr. Holmes’ strong background working with students and schools will undoubtedly assist in growing the pipeline of Black actuarial professionals.  “I’m excited to take the lead of the IABA as it celebrates its 30th anniversary and to welcome the next chapter of an organization that continues to grow and make such an important impact,” said Dr. Tiffany Holmes.  “Now more than ever, IABA is well positioned to share with young, Black students how an actuarial career is rich with possibilities and to further develop opportunities for Black Actuaries already engaged in the profession.  To be able to join the organization at this moment in IABA’s history is a career highlight.”

Over the last several years, the organization has enjoyed incredible growth and has been able to add and advance programming.  As such, IABA is currently well poised for Dr. Holmes to build a team to continue this momentum and to create ongoing progress within the organization and the profession as a whole.

“Our search gave us an opportunity to take a look at the growth of our organization and make sure we aligned our needs with the new role of the Executive Director.  We saw great interest from an incredible pool of applicants for this role, which made this decision very difficult, but Dr. Holmes stood out because she provides us with a leader that we believe will take the International Association of Black Actuaries forward and set us up for another 30 years of success,” said Dwayne Husbands, FSA, CFA, MAAA, IABA President and Senior Manager in EY’s Insurance and Actuarial Advisory Services practice.

Dr. Holmes joins IABA after a significant career as a leader with Skyrocket Education.  Before her tenure there, she was with the KIPP Philadelphia Public Schools, Mastery Charter Schools, Maria L. Varisco-Rogers Charter School, Team Academy Charter School, New York Department of Education and Sesame Workshop.  Dr. Holmes received her Bachelor of Arts from Rutgers University – New Brunswick Campus and her Master of Science in Education from the College of Staten Island – CUNY.  In addition, she received her Principal Endorsement from Western Governors University, Superintendent Endorsement from Gwynedd Mercy University, and Doctorate of Educational Leadership from Gwynedd Mercy University.  She has also received numerous awards including the Philadelphia Academy of School Leaders – Leader of Leaders, New York City Teaching Fellow, Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year, and National Association of Philadelphia Women Community Service Award.  Dr. Holmes currently resides in the suburbs of Philadelphia where she will lead the IABA.
