Proposals for Presentations are due no later than May 15, 2020

The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) and the Actuarial Institute of Chinese Taipei (AICT) invite you to be a part of the 2020 Joint Property/Casualty and Health Actuarial Seminar scheduled for September 14-15, 2020 in Taipei. If you are unable to travel, presenting virtually is also possible.

The Seminar Planning Committee strives to construct a rich program addressing issues, applications and insight across a broad spectrum of professional practices and fostering cross-pollination and collaboration of actuarial and other insurance professionals without regard to geographic location. Registration will be open to attendees across the region.

The following is a sample list of topics and/or potential presentations of greatest relevance to the Committee; it is not exhaustive. Other topics are also welcome:

  • Autonomous Vehicle – Car-Sharing Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., has conducted an open road test of its self-driving cars in the Phoenix area recently. As self-driving technology advances, further frameworks on relevant insurance product design and pricing may be discussed.
  • Impact of Autonomous Vehicles on Future Insurance Market Currently, factors that may affect your auto insurance premium are your car, your driving record, your age as well as the coverage you choose. However, as autonomous cars continue to be developed, the insurance market will see a fundamental change, both in terms of the way premiums are set and in the way in which liability is established.
  • Dynamic Pricing of Health Insurance In general, the premium for health insurance is set by gender and age, without reflecting other risk factors. Recently, as wearable devices have emerged, insureds now pay attention to their health status. In the future, dynamic pricing may be achieved through monitoring and analyzing other health factors collected from wearables.
  • Impact of AI on Health Insurance AI is impacting the health insurance industry in two areas: cost efficiency and fraud detection. In the process, AI is believed to introduce greater accuracy and personalization. Meanwhile, insureds can rely on algorithms to select what is best for their needs. Most importantly, detecting anomalies promptly, AI will help in saving unnecessary costs and time spent on saving mistakes.
  • “Interactive Insurance” by Physiological Data and Algorithm The insurance industry mostly takes age and occupation as the basis for premiums setting. Collecting real-time physiological data of insureds through wearables, insurance companies will be able to have more information on risk assessing and give out discounts on premiums. Integrating physiological data with an algorithm may help insurance companies better understand risk factors as well as insurance pricing.
  • Applications of AI: Analyzing and Forecasting Studying the characteristics of customers, insurance companies can forecast the future needs of products. In the meantime, companies can prevent future fraudulent claims by analyzing past fraud characteristics.
  • Applications of AI: Collecting and Processing Big Data Under legal circumstances, the use of web robots can collect a large amount of data from the website. Insurance companies may process the data and use it as a source for analyzing.
  • Blockchain Applications Currently in Taiwan, the usage of blockchain technology can only be seen in travel inconvenience insurance. The introduction of blockchain technology into personal accident insurance and auto insurance can not only reduce the time for claim review but also prevent the occurrence of insurance fraud.
  • Cyber risk Latest development on Cyber insurance, and topics on cyber ratemaking.
  • Agricultural Insurance Pricing In recent years, the government has been actively promoting agricultural insurance. However, the high frequency of natural disasters in Taiwan often leads to serious agricultural loss. With AI at the helm, insurance companies can better price the insurance through assessing risk around certain crops, geographical locations or weather patterns.
  • Recent development on piecemeal insurance and successful examples provide coverage to a special event (maybe one time event) with very low insured amount and premium via non-traditional sales channel. Piecemeal insurance became very popular in China recently (eg. Package return insurance). Now, some insurers in Taiwan are also trying to develop piecemeal insurance. Actuaries and underwriters might be interested in this topic including recent successful examples in other region and key drivers of being successful.

As noted above, the organizing team is particularly interested in the speaker sharing real-world, hands-on experiences. The most relevant lines of insurance are non-life (also known as property/casualty or general insurance) and health insurance.

The seminar audience is anticipated to include primarily actuaries from Taiwan and the greater Asia region, typically practitioners with 10 to 25 years of experience in the insurance industry.

The Committee is issuing this call to solicit ideas for professional content and to identify outstanding speakers for the 2020 event. The Committee wants your ideas and proposals for sessions that will deliver valuable content and will be engaging to attendees.

The Committee has the final authority to select session topics, presentations and speakers that best meet the educational and professional objectives of the seminar; and to work with a potential speaker to adjust the content of a session to meet those needs. Also, we recommend that proposed panelists in a specific session be from a minimum of two different employers.

Mandarin and English are both acceptable for your presentation. Please indicate the language(s) that you plan to utilize for your spoken remarks and any slides.

Speakers are encouraged to have their employer’s support on the travel cost. The seminar registration fee will be waived for speakers, and we invite you to participate in the entire seminar. If you do not know if you can travel, there may be options to present to this audience long distance.

Please submit your proposed session title, session description, speaker(s), presentation language(s), and other requested information using the online submission process no later than May 15, 2020 by clicking the link below.
