Tesla has joined the growing list of high-profile companies that recognize actuaries as valuable and creative problem-solvers who are essential to their organizations. CEO Elon Musk told investors on Tesla’s recent July 22 second-quarter earnings conference call that he “would love to have some high energy actuaries” join the company’s newest insurance efforts. "I have great respect for the actuarial profession,” Musk continued. “[Actuaries] are great at math. …We want revolutionary actuaries."
Last month CAS members virtually joined an array of actuarial science experts promoting education, research and interaction within the industry at the 55th Actuarial Research Conference (ARC). The ARC provides an opportunity for academics and practitioners to meet and discuss actuarial problems and their solutions. The 2020 conference was hosted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, August 10-12.

In the latter half of 2013, personal auto insurance carriers began to notice an uptick in property damage liability and collision frequency. Subsequent loss cost experience has varied in frequency and severity, and by coverage type, region, demographics, weather patterns, quality of road maintenance, congestion level and other factors. In response, industry partners banded together to analyze these trends.

The CAS has developed a CBT tutorial video to accompany the sample questions and example solutions for CAS Exams 5-9 released earlier this month. This video walks candidates through the various spreadsheet functions and features to become familiar with prior to exam day.
Dear CAS Members, Candidates, and others in the CAS Community, The death of George Floyd and current nationwide protests are a stark reminder of the systemic racism that pervades our society. The CAS is committed to creating an actuarial profession that values each and every person, celebrates diversity, addresses inequities, and encourages inclusion. Our organization has been working towards these goals for years, but we know we can and must do better going forward.
This two-day seminar is intended to fill a void in intermediate level reinsurance education. The program will start with a review of reinsurance structures, including a discussion of how those programs can be tailored to meet the needs of clients and the issues that some structures create for reinsurers. This presentation will also cover pricing prorata reinsurance. The next set of sessions will review excess of loss experience and exposure rating for both property and casualty.
The CAS IFRS17 Task Force will conduct an environmental survey of its international membership to determine the role the CAS should play in educating its members in IFRS17. Questions that should be answered are: Is there a need for international CAS members to learn more about implementation of IFRS17 (before January 1, 2021 deadline); Where are they obtaining this education if they need it; Should the CAS become involved in the delivery of this education; What kind of deliverables should the CAS provide?

The CASE 2020 Spring Meeting expected to be held in Nashville, Tennessee on March 16, 2020 is cancelled.Our venue Vanderbilt has cancelled all events booked in their event spaces through April 30th. Additionally, some of our speakers were impacted by company travel bans.We recognize that the timing of this decision may inconvenience some of you and we apologize for the inconvenience. The CAS will be processing refunds and we estimate that it will take 2 to 3 weeks to receive the refund. No action is required by attendees to request the refund.

The CAS has completed its first exam sittings with Pearson VUE, with the administration of MAS-I on November 10 and MAS-II on November 13. MAS-I was given to 1,211 candidates in 17 countries, and MAS-II was given to 289 exams in 14 countries.
