The First Annual CAS Actuarial Technology Survey

Year
2022
Description
In the summer of 2021, the CAS asked members and candidates to participate in a survey about their use of technology in actuarial work. Nearly 1,300 responses were received. The results show that most actuaries use Excel on an almost-daily basis. Scripting tools like R and Python are not as widely in use, though many respondents indicated their interest in developing those skills. Time is seen as the greatest barrier to learning and implementing new tools. Finally, leading edge predictive modeling techniques like tree-based algorithms and AI are used by only a minority of respondents.
