Continuing Education Credits

The CAS Continuing Education Policy applies to all ACAS and FCAS members who provide actuarial services. Actuarial services are defined in the CAS Code of Professional Conduct as “professional services provided to a Principal by an individual acting in the capacity of an actuary. Such services include the rendering of advice, recommendations, findings or opinions based upon actuarial considerations.” Members who are or could be subject to the continuing education requirements of a national actuarial organization can meet the requirements of the CAS Continuing Education Policy by satisfying the continuing education requirements established by a national actuarial organization recognized by the Policy.

This activity may qualify for up to 15.5 CE credits for the Annual Meeting for CAS members. Participants should claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. CAS members earn 1 CE credit per 50 minutes of educational session time, not to include breaks or lunch.

Note: The amount of CE credit that can be earned for participating in this activity must be assessed by the individual attendee. It also may be different for individuals who are subject to the requirements of organizations other than the American Academy of Actuaries.

Suggested Attire

Business casual attire is suggested for the conference sessions and receptions. It is best to wear layered clothing as meeting rooms tend to fluctuate in temperature.

In Las Vegas, the average high temperature during November is 67º F/19º C and the average low is 47º F/8º C.

Anaheim Hotel

Caesars Palace recaptures the glory of Greece and the grandeur of Rome in an 85-acre destination resort that sets the stage for an unparalleled experience of breathtaking opulence combined with impeccable service and every contemporary luxury imaginable. Discover an iconic empire where indulgence knows no bounds.

Contracted Group Room Rate is $199 for single/double room, plus taxes and a $32 resort fee, and only applies to Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday nights, November 11-13.

The CAS block is now sold out, though Caesars does still have some vacant rooms on some of the nights of the Annual Meeting. The daily room rate is now based on hotel availability which fluctuates. The CAS is not contracting with another property for overflow sleeping rooms, rather we will direct you to a list of nearby hotels to pursue on your own:

Bellagio Hotel and Casino
The Nobu Hotel
Flamingo Las Vegas
The Cromwell Las Vegas Hotel & Casino
Bally's
Paris Las Vegas

The resort fee includes unlimited local phone calls, two (2) guest admissions per day to the Fitness Center (does not include use of the Spa), and In-Room Internet access to include two (2) device per room per day within the sleeping room.

Reservations must be made prior to October 19, 2018. Check in at the Caesars Palace is 4:00 p.m. and check out is by 11:00 a.m.

RESERVATIONS

Reservations may be made online or via telephone:

  • Online reservations
  • Telephone reservations, call 866-227-5944 and reference CAS Annual Meeting or group code: SCCAS8. Please note there is a processing fee for reservations made via telephone instead of the dedicated web link above.

While reservations must be made prior to October 19, 2018, in order to receive the $199 rate, there is no guarantee that rooms will be available should you wait until this date. CAS strongly suggests that you make your room reservations early to secure accommodations before the room block fills.

ADDITIONAL ACCOMMODATION INFORMATION

For more information on the hotel or the Las Vegas area, please visit either https://www.caesars.com/caesars-palace or https://www.visitlasvegas.com/, respectively.

Important Information Regarding Hotel Accomodation

The Casualty Actuarial Society is able to conduct high-quality meetings at desirable sites for a reasonable registration fee because a block of hotel rooms is reserved for meeting attendees. In exchange for filling the required number of sleeping rooms, the CAS is permitted to use the hotel’s meeting space at no cost, thus keeping registration fees low. In addition, meeting attendees receive a reduced rate for their sleeping rooms. We kindly request that all meeting attendees take advantage of the group rate and stay at the official Annual Meeting property, Caesars Palace.

Transportation Information

Caesars Place is located approximately 3.8 miles from McCarran International Airport. The estimated one-way taxicab fare from this airport to the hotel is around $30. Ride Share service is available. A TALE OF TWO ANALYTICS TRIBES: ACTUARY VS. DATA SCIENTIST

In 2014 Chris Dixon Tweeted that "A data scientist is a statistician who lives in San Francisco." Dixon went on to say that a data scientist is someone who is better at statistics than any software engineer and better at software engineering than any statistician. So much for statisticians. How do actuaries compare to data scientists? Is insurance acumen the only difference? Which profession has the best prognosis for a thriving future? As actuaries develop broader and deeper predictive modeling and Big Data skills will more work in alternative careers outside mainstream insurance? Join our panel as they discuss the past, present and future of these two analytics tribes.

The market for flood insurance is changing. Historically, nearly all flood insurance in the United States was offered through the National Flood Insurance Program. Recently there was been rapid growth in interest in private flood insurance and in some states there is now an active private flood insurance market. What are the risks of entering this market or staying on the sidelines? What are the opportunities? This session will demonstrate how private companies can evaluate the feasibility of offering flood insurance and describe different methods of pricing flood insurance in the private market including their advantages and disadvantages.

Moderator:
Carl Ashenbrenner, Principal and Consulting Actuary, Milliman
Panelists:
Matt Chamberlain, Consulting Actuary, Milliman
James Watje, Senior Vice President of Private Flood, Wright National Flood Insurance Services, LLC
Mitchell Waldner, Actuary, FEMA/DHS

BRAIN INJURIES/CTE IMPACT

There has been an increasing focus on the effects of repetitive head impacts on individuals later in life. One disease process thought to be caused by these repeated hits to the head is chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). By studying athletes, military veterans and other individuals with high exposure to repetitive head impacts, researchers have begun to understand the risk factors and exposures responsible for the development and progression of CTE.
While the exact incidence and prevalence of CTE remain unknown, there is increasing evidence that CTE affects amateur athletes as well as professional athletes and military veterans. The NFL currently has over 20,000 potential claimants and the pool of defendants is expanding into schools and other sports groups.

This panel will explore what medical research knows about the long-term effects of repetitive head impacts, including risk factors and epidemiology of chronic traumatic encephalopathy. They will also define the target defendants, key theories of liability, potential defenses and recent rulings, as well as discuss the various coverage issues these claims present.

Barbara Murray, Claims Specialist, PricewaterhouseCoopers

Daniel H. Daneshvar, M.D., Ph.D., Neuroscientist, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center, Boston University School of Medicine/Founder, Team Up Against Concussions

SILICON VALLEY — ACTUARIAL STYLE

We’ve heard about the battle between actuaries and data scientists, but what about the world of tech? Can we survive there? What skills translate? Let’s hear from a panel of speakers with firsthand experience of what it’s like to work at a tech firm.

This panel discussion will address three main questions:

  • What does an actuary in the tech industry do?
  • What unique skills are required to succeed in this field?
  • What is the future of actuaries in tech?

Moderator:
Kudakwashe Chibanda, Director of Data Science, The Hartford
Panelists:
Frank Chang, Director of Insurance and Safety Analytics, Uber Technologies
Greg Ryslik, VP Data Science, Mindstrong
