CAS Releases 2023 Spotlight on Diversity Infographics

The CAS is committed to maintaining transparency and accountability around our diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) efforts, as part of the CAS Strategic Approach to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion adopted by the Board of Directors in February 2022. Today, the CAS has released its 2023 Spotlight on Diversity Infographics, a detailed set of metrics designed to help us understand the current state of diversity in the CAS and track changes over time. This is the fourth year that CAS has published this data.
Key Takeaways:

  • Women make up 31% of CAS members in the United States and 34% of pre-ACAS exam-takers in the United States, the latter a decrease from 36% of candidates in 2021, despite increasing representation of women among STEM degree recipients in recent years.
  • Black and Latino representation among CAS members in the U.S. (1.5% and 2.0%, respectively) and among pre-ACAS exam-takers (3.2% and 4.8%, respectively) remains well below external benchmarks such as Insurance Industry employees (14% and 12%), Mathematics employees (9% and 8%), and STEM degree recipients (7% and 13%).
    • While representation of Black candidates stayed flat at 3.2%, there has been a steady increase over the last few years in representation of Latino candidates, from 4.2% in 2021 to 4.8% in 2023.
  • 18% of CAS members in the U.S. and 22% of pre-ACAS candidates in the U.S. identify as Asian, but representation among CAS leadership (Committee Chairs, Executive Council and Board Members) lags behind those figures. In 2023, 12% of Committee Chairs and 11% of EC/Board members over the last 3 years identify as Asian, an increase from 11% and 7%, respectively, as of 2022.

The CAS, in partnership with actuarial diversity organizations, has undertaken several activities in recent years to increase awareness of the actuarial profession among underrepresented groups and to foster diversity in leadership, including:
