Why do you want to serve on the CAS Board of Directors?

I want to serve on the CAS Board of Directors because I am deeply committed to the long-term success and relevance of the actuarial profession. I believe the CAS plays a critical role in shaping that future. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to work in a variety of volunteering and leadership roles with the CAS that have given me a broad view of the challenges and opportunities facing actuaries today. I believe my background as a frequent volunteer with the CAS equips me to contribute meaningfully to the Board’s work. In particular, I served as the Vice President of Marketing and Communications for the CAS, an experience that provided insight into the working of the CAS and its board. My background is in consulting, specifically for the alternative risk market, and I have seen firsthand how the profession must continuously evolve to meet the needs of a rapidly changing industry.

I am particularly passionate about strengthening the Society’s role in three key areas:

  1. Supporting actuaries at all career stages. One of the most important priorities for the CAS moving forward must be enhancing the member experience — not just during credentialing, but throughout a member’s entire career, including retirement. In an increasingly digital and global environment, it’s critical that the CAS continue to find new ways to connect with its members, understand their evolving needs, and deliver targeted value. I want to ensure members at every level — from students and associates to seasoned fellows — feel connected, supported, and empowered by their CAS membership. This includes expanding access to high-quality continuing education, enhancing networking opportunities through both in-person and virtual events, and building flexible platforms for knowledge sharing and professional growth. Throughout my career, I’ve benefited from the CAS’s commitment to rigorous education, professional development, and community. I want all members to experience those same benefits.
  2. Listening to our members. I believe the CAS must prioritize transparent, two-way communication so that we are not only informing members but also hearing them — their aspirations, their pain points, their ideas for the future. By improving feedback mechanisms, increasing member-driven initiatives, and offering more volunteer pathways (including micro-volunteering or low-commitment roles), we can build a stronger, more inclusive, and more responsive profession for all actuaries.
  3. Making “actuary” a household name – Growing up, I was fortunate that my mom introduced me to both the actuarial world and the captive insurance community. While aspirational, I would love for everyone to have that opportunity, and I believe that would make the actuarial profession stronger. I want to help the CAS expand its outreach and build pathways for everyone interested in actuarial careers. We need to be intentional about inclusion and create a culture where every member feels seen, heard, and valued.

Serving on the CAS Board would be an honor and is a way for me to give back by helping the Society evolve strategically, transparently, and inclusively.

Candidate Issue(s) Identification and Discussion

The discussion below expands the items identified above in why I want to serve.

Issue: Candidate experience. The CAS faces several opportunities in its candidate experience, particularly related to exam administration, transparency, and communication.

1. Exam Administration Issues. Candidates reported disruptions during exams, including technical difficulties and issues with exam submissions. These incidents have led to frustration, with candidates expressing concerns over the CAS's accountability and responsiveness.

2. Lack of Transparency and Communication. There is a perceived lack of transparency in the CAS's decision-making processes. Candidates have noted changes in exam formats, syllabi, and requirements. These changes have contributed to uncertainty and stress among candidates, who feel they are not adequately informed about the reasons behind these decisions.

3. Accountability and Support Concerns. Candidates have expressed a desire for greater accountability from the CAS, particularly in the aftermath of exam disruptions.

The candidates are the CAS’s lifeblood. We need to ensure they feel supported, and they want to continue with the CAS. I believe all of the above are opportunities for the CAS to enhance transparency and improve communication with the future generation of actuaries. A few ideas I would like to see the CAS explore include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Establish a formal oversight committee to audit and monitor vendors
  • Have a clear and transparent contingency plan
  • Work with vendors to hire external auditors to validate systems before high-volume exam windows
  • Provide high-level summaries of common mistakes or areas where candidates struggled (while preserving exam security)
  • Create feedback loops where after exams, the CAS would survey candidates and publish anonymized insights to show how feedback is being used.

Issue: CAS expanding its outreach. The CAS has made great strides in recent years to broaden its outreach to raise awareness of the actuarial profession, attract a more diverse and inclusive candidate pipeline, strengthen relationships with academic institutions and employers, and enhance member engagement. I’m committed to helping the CAS expand its outreach and create accessible pathways for anyone interested in pursuing and thriving in an actuarial career in the following areas:

  • Increase public awareness through strategic media campaigns, educational outreach at both the K-12 and college levels, and collaborate with professional societies outside of the actuarial community (e.g., captive insurance company)
  • Broaden access by expanding the exam reimbursement program and exploring other ways to decrease the economic barrier to entry
  • Strengthen relationships with employers
  • Enhance member and candidate engagement to build long-term loyalty and involvement and leverage those relationships to help build the actuarial brand
  • Continue to collaborate closely with our international partners and members to strengthen and expand the global presence of the CAS.
