About This Event
PURPOSE
Candidates must successfully complete the Course on Professionalism to achieve the designation: Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society (ACAS).
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The Course on Professionalism is designed to make the candidate aware of the requirements of the CAS, CIA, and AAA regarding the conduct of the actuary in the performance of his or her duties. After working through the pre-work and taking the course, the candidate completing the course should know:
- The Code of Professional Conduct and how to apply it in everyday work.
- The importance of the applicability of the Code of Professional Conduct to members of the profession at all levels and areas of practice given the self-regulating nature of the actuarial profession.
- What types of formal professional guidance are applicable to the Casualty Actuary, and which organizations are responsible for promulgating them.
- The potential consequences of violations of the Code of Professional Conduct or other formal professional guidance.
- Basic business communication skills and show familiarity with the skills necessary to communicate actuarial topics to actuarial and non-actuarial audiences.
- Become familiar with common societal biases and their intersection with professional conduct.
- The function of organizations that promulgate formal professional guidance.
- How an actuary who violates professional standards may be counselled or disciplined.
- How an actuary should handle an apparent material violation of formal professional guidance by another actuary.
- The requirements for continuing professional education for the jurisdiction relevant to the Actuary’s practice.
The Committee on Professionalism Education, which is responsible for developing the Course on Professionalism (COP), has developed the following rotating schedule for COP locations. The Committee has selected these cities and rotation in an effort to best serve the candidate audience. As a reminder, candidates should never make travel arrangements prior to registering and receiving a registration confirmation from the CAS. The rotating location schedule is merely offered as an advance planning tool and is subject to change.
ATTENDANCE
Candidates will be expected to attend and actively participate in the full course in order to receive the professionalism credit.
CANCELLATIONS
Registration fees will be refunded for cancellations received by November 1, 2025 less a $200 processing fee. Only written cancellations will be honoured, and they will be accepted by email to refund@casact.org.
Preliminary Requirements
- E-Modules - All registered candidates will be required to view presentations on each of the ASOPs before attending the in-person course. These presentations, termed e-modules, consist of a series of slides with audio to guide you through the ASOP presentations. Each presentation contains questions placed throughout the slides that will need to be answered correctly to proceed and complete the presentation. Completion of each e-module for each candidate will be tracked by the CAS; to successfully complete the Course on Professionalism all presentations must be completed by the date noted in your confirmation email.
- Communication Skills - Candidates will be required to complete pre-work on communication skills topics and should be prepared to use these skills during the course. This requirement takes approximately three hours.
- Pre-Readings - There are several pre-readings that will help candidates to become familiar with and prepare to discuss professionalism topics.
A link for all preliminary requirements will be emailed to you post registration. The E-modules and Communications Skills will be due on November 3, 2025.
