Announcement Regarding May 2023 CAS Exam Sitting

In 2020, the CAS established a partnership with Pearson VUE, the global leader in computer-based testing, as its new test delivery partner to serve the CAS candidate community across the globe. With the close of the May 2023 exam sitting, the CAS has conducted six successful computer-based exam sittings with over 23,000 exams delivered.

The CAS is aware that some candidates experienced technical issues at a Pearson VUE testing center during the most recent exam administration and recognizes the impact that technical issues have on the testing experience. Any issues that arise during exam sittings are taken seriously by the CAS and the Syllabus and Examination Working Group leaders. The CAS is working with Pearson VUE on measures to minimize the risks of similar issues arising during future sittings.

“The Casualty Actuarial Society and Pearson VUE share a set of common values – including a dedication to operational excellence and professional expertise,” says Eric D’Astolfo, Vice President of Business Development, Pearson VUE. “As a global leader in high-stakes exam delivery, we understand the considerable time and effort CAS candidates invest in preparing for their exams, and we are committed to a positive exam experience. To that end, we maintain proven processes to capture, evaluate, and address any concern or issue that may occur during test delivery to support CAS’s goal to provide fair, valid, and reliable exams."

Candidates are reminded that should they experience an administration irregularity such as a technical issue during their exam, they should immediately report the issue to the site administrator and request a Case Number. Pearson VUE Case Numbers are assigned to any administration irregularity that may occur from the time a candidate checks in at the exam center to when they leave the exam center. Case Numbers should then be included with any grievance submissions to the CAS. All candidates who are impacted by irregularities and submit a grievance via the CAS Grievance Policy will have their experience taken into consideration in the grading process. More information and details on how to submit grievances is available in the Candidate Feedback and Grievances Policy on the CAS website.

“While the pandemic created myriad challenges over the past couple of years, CAS is extremely pleased with our partnership with Pearson VUE and the benefits it has provided to our candidate community,” says William Wilder, FCAS, CAS Vice-President-Admissions. “We are continually working with Pearson VUE to minimize the possibilities of issues occurring during the exam sitting because I and the other volunteer leaders understand first-hand what’s at stake when a candidate sits for an exam. We are also continually working with Pearson VUE and the CAS to staff on ways to enhance the overall candidate experience.”
