CAS Expands Spring 2021 Exam Offerings to Include Exam 8

The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) is expanding the exams that will be offered in Spring 2021 to include Exam 8, which is normally only offered once per year in the fall. This change provides additional flexibility to candidates whose exam progress was disrupted by the cancellation of the Spring 2020 exam sitting.

The CAS’s Fellowship exams, 7, 8, and 9, are typically offered once per year, with Exams 7 and 9 offered in the spring and Exam 8 offered in the fall. When the CAS cancelled the Spring 2020 exam sitting due to health and safety concerns related to the novel coronavirus, Exams 7 and 9 were moved to the Fall 2020 exam sitting. In this scenario, a candidate who would have taken Exams 7 or 9 in the spring and then Exam 8 in the fall was therefore confronted with a difficult choice:

  • Continue with plans to take Exam 7 or 9 in the fall, and then wait a year to take Exam 8 the following fall, or
  • Double-up on the Fall 2020 exam sitting by sitting for both Exams 7 or 9 and Exam 8.

“The pandemic has put everyone in a difficult situation, so it’s important that we minimize the disruption to candidates’ plans for taking CAS exams as best we can,” said Victor Carter-Bey, CAS CEO. “Our volunteers and staff have committed to offering an additional opportunity for candidates to sit for Exam 8 next spring, as we understand how much candidates depend on CAS exams for their career development and advancement. I sincerely appreciate our volunteers in particular for stepping up in this way.”

The CAS has published an FAQ that outlines changes to the standard CAS admissions process resulting from the cancellation of the Spring 2020 exam sitting. Additional questions that are not addressed in the FAQ may be submitted to the Actuaries’ Resource Center at arc@casact.org.
