Casualty Actuarial Society Hires Wesley J. Griffiths, FCAS, as First Staff Admissions Actuary

Arlington, VA – October 29, 2019 – The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) has named Wesley J. Griffiths, FCAS, as its first staff admissions actuary. The admissions actuary is a newly created position that will support implementing the CAS’s long-term vision and strategic plan and will contribute to the organization’s ongoing efforts to deliver value to the casualty actuarial profession. Griffiths will work closely with executive leadership, volunteer members and CAS staff to advise on all aspects of CAS basic education, including working closely with the Syllabus and Examination Committee, evaluating and updating the current CAS Syllabus of Basic Education, exploring and implementing Technology-Based Examination (TBE), and working to ensure that current and future CAS examinations meet the needs of candidates and their employers.

Prior to joining the CAS, Griffiths worked at Travelers Insurance in St. Paul, Minnesota for almost twenty years, holding titles such as second vice president and senior actuary. He performed pricing and reserving functions across the company’s commercial business segments and led the actuarial support function for the technology and public entity industry segments in his last assignment.

A long-time CAS volunteer, Griffiths has been instrumental in leading several efforts, including university engagement, leadership development and the joint CAS/SOA Committee on Career Encouragement and Actuarial Diversity . He has also served on exam committees, contributed to several task forces and served on the CAS board of directors from 2014 to 2016. Griffiths also served the industry on the board of trustees of Gamma Iota Sigma, the insurance industry’s collegiate talent pipeline and just completed his term as board president. Griffiths has been a member of the CAS since 2005 and a Fellow since 2009.

“We are excited to welcome Wesley to the CAS in this new admissions role,” said Ashley Zamperini, CAE, CAS director of admissions. “Having an admissions staff actuary will offer more depth and precision to our efforts in maintaining the CAS as the leading international organization for credentialing property and casualty actuaries. Wesley’s extensive and impressive volunteer history has earned him a stellar reputation among the CAS volunteers and staff and will transition him seamlessly into this new role.”

“Credentialing property and casualty actuaries has been a core focus of the CAS for over 100 years. Remaining the gold standard will require an evolution of our basic education system leveraging new technologies for both delivery and validation of the content and techniques,” Griffiths commented. “The CAS has meant a lot to me both personally and professionally, and I am excited to serve the organization and its members in this new capacity to help transform the admissions process.”

Griffiths holds undergraduate degrees in both mathematics and economics from the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

Griffiths joins CAS members Ran Guo, Brian Fannin and Ken Williams as one of four actuaries employed by the CAS.
