CAS Members Invited to Attend Dive In Festival

Registration is now open for the 2020 Dive In Festival, the global celebration of diversity and inclusion in the insurance industry. The Festival takes place in over 30 countries across the globe on September 22 – 24, 2020.

The CAS/SOA Joint Committee on Inclusion, Equity, and Diversity (JCIED), is pleased to present a session at this year’s festival:

Unconventional Wisdom from Conventional Quants

It is widely recognized that there is a lack of diversity in analytical fields like Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), and it’s especially true in the actuarial profession. That’s why two professional societies have joined forces to effect change. The Society of Actuaries and Casualty Actuarial Society are working together to build a more diverse and inclusive insurance industry at all levels of leadership in the US and around the world. This session will introduce the audience to the work of the Joint Committee for Inclusion, Equity and Diversity (JCIED) and be moderated by its Co-Chairs, Mallika Bender, FCAS, MAAA and Sara Teppema, FSA, MAAA.

The session will feature TED-style talks from four analytical minds who are challenging the status quo, and audience members will be invited to sound-off on each topic throughout the session.

  • The STEM mindset: Cultivating the next generation – Talithia Williams, Ph.D.
  • Challenging cultural norms in work and life – Karen DeToro, FSA
  • Building ethical, inclusive, and fair AI – Michael Y. Xiao, FSA
  • Growing through global experiences – Alejandra Nolibos, FCAS

The session will be offered on September 22 from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. ET.

Registration is now open and is free. The entirety of this year’s Dive In Festival will be virtual, allowing participants to attend any of the over 90 events being offered. Each event in the three-day festival has a capacity of up to 600, making it the most accessible festival for diversity and inclusion in the world.

Other sessions being organized by the actuarial community in collaboration with other insurance professionals include:

  • The Twin Cities team is presenting a discussion on disability inclusion and why inclusive, accessible, flexible workplaces and policies are the key to helping everyone work better, scheduled for September 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. CT.
  • The Chicago team is presenting a discussion on systemic segregation and violence and its impact on under-served communities, scheduled for September 24 from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. CT.

Registration is filling quickly, so don’t hesitate to register online today!
