2016 CAS University Award Winner - Illinois State University
The actuarial science program at Illinois State University, led by program director Krzysztof Ostaszewski, consists of 12 faculty members working with actuarial students and approximately 210 actuarial students. The program is housed in the Department of Mathematics and works very closely with the Katie School of Insurance and Financial Services in the College of Business.
Illinois State University was recognized as a 2016 award winner for initiatives such as:
- Property and casualty insurance concepts built into the actuarial science curriculum with specific courses that cover CAS Exam S at the undergraduate level and CAS Exams 5 and 9 at the graduate level.
- Industry engagement and innovations including the Pinnacle University initiative started in 2014 that pairs actuarial students with analysts from Pinnacle Actuarial Resources to solve case studies, and strong representation by property and casualty industry professionals on actuarial and insurance advisory boards, including 12 property and casualty actuaries on Illinois State University’s Actuarial Program Advisory Board.
- Production of consistent research on property and casualty insurance topics by faculty, as well as opportunities for students to conduct research in this area.
- Significant number of property and casualty actuaries among alumni. During the program’s 20 year history it has produced, 58 Fellows and 48 Associates of the Casualty Actuarial Society, making up the majority of credentialed actuarial alumni from Illinois State University.
