Casualty Actuarial Society Hires Brian Fannin, ACAS, as First Staff Research Actuary
Arlington VA – March 13, 2018 – The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) has named Brian Fannin, ACAS, CSPA, as its first staff research actuary. The research actuary will work with CAS volunteers and staff to develop, support and expand the research functions of the CAS. Fannin is a twenty year veteran of the insurance industry and a longtime member of the CAS. He joined the staff on March 12.
Prior to joining the CAS, Fannin served as chief actuary at The Redwoods Group, a role held since 2012. He is also the founder of PirateGrunt LLC, a boutique consulting firm based in Durham, North Carolina specializing in predictive modeling in the property casualty markets. Fannin has been an Associate of the CAS since 2002 and a Certified Specialist in Predictive Analytics (CSPA) through The CAS Institute since 2017.
Fannin’s resume includes insurance and actuarial work at companies like Swiss Reinsurance America, Munich Reinsurance Company, CNA and The Hartford. He is in the final stages of publishing a book on the programming language, R, and has conducted workshops and seminars on behalf of the CAS on the topic. Fannin has also served as a research volunteer for the CAS, most recently chairing the CAS Open Source Software Committee.

Fannin holds a bachelor’s of science degree in engineering from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
