The Casualty Actuarial Society Establishes Computer-Based Testing Relationship With Pearson Vue

Arlington, Va. – May 19, 2020 – The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) has selected Pearson VUE, the global leader in computer-based testing, as its new test delivery partner to serve the CAS candidate community across the globe. The CAS serves over 9,000 members worldwide, and its flagship Associate (ACAS) and Fellow (FCAS) designations are considered the gold standard for property and casualty actuaries around the world. Pearson VUE has more than 30 years of experience in the assessment industry.

The partnership signals a transition to computer-based testing meant to offer CAS candidates an experience that more closely imitates on-the-job assignments in which actuaries use computers and spreadsheets for their work. CAS candidates will also now have access to the network of Pearson Professional Centers, located at more than 300 locations throughout the U.S. and Canada, as well as in 20 other countries. CAS continues to experience record exam sittings in recent years as the actuarial profession becomes increasingly in-demand; the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected a 20 percent growth in the employment of actuaries over the next ten years.

“This exciting move is important for the future of CAS,” said CAS CEO Victor Carter-Bey. “Pearson VUE’s investment in technology and availability of global test centers will allow us to serve our certification candidates and partners more efficiently and effectively. This partnership will help ensure that we provide the best possible testing experience one would expect from a world-class organization like the CAS.”

“We are delighted to support the Casualty Actuarial Society in their transition to computer-based testing by delivering ACAS and FCAS certification assessments. Candidates will find it easier to choose a test center location and time that is convenient to them. Another exciting prospect is that CBT will enable CAS to go further in testing real-life skills by incorporating exam content or items in which actuaries use spreadsheet functionality, for example,” commented Eric D’Astolfo, Vice President, Business Development at Pearson VUE.

Beginning this fall, the CAS’s multiple-choice exams, MAS-I and MAS-II, will be delivered via computer-based testing. Constructed response exams, beginning with Exam 6-Canada, will start transitioning in the spring of 2021, with a goal to offer all CAS exams via computer-based testing by the end of 2022.
