CAS Announces Cancellation of April Exam Sitting

Dear Candidates,

The CAS has made the difficult decision to cancel the exams originally scheduled to be held later this month. While we previously announced that we were postponing the exams, with plans for administering the exams in June, we have decided that the best course of action is to proceed with a full cancellation at this time. Exams 7 and 9, which are normally administered in April, will be administered this October instead.

This announcement pertains solely to CAS exams MAS-I, MAS-II, Exam 5, Exam 6-Canada, Exam 6-US, Exam 7 and Exam 9. For exams and courses administered by other organizations, such as CAS online courses administered by The Institutes, please refer to those organizations directly for the most updated information.

CAS staff and volunteers considered a wide range of options for administering the April CAS exams later this summer. However, we determined that due to health and safety concerns, and the strong desire to maintain the high integrity of our examination system and credentials, any options under consideration were not feasible, particularly with the uncertainty of the current situation and how it might unfold.

I share in your disappointment and frustration during these challenging times. We recognize that we could find ourselves in a similar situation with the October exam sitting, and will now turn our focus to preparing for it. By cancelling the April exam sitting now, we will be able to expend our energy on a viable contingency plan for October that would allow candidates to take exams remotely. We are absolutely committed to administering CAS exams in some format in the fall.

All candidates who registered for an April exam will have their registration automatically transferred to the fall sitting. The schedule for administering Exams 7 and 9 will be determined as soon as possible and announced to registrants of those exams directly. If you would no longer like to sit for your registered exam in the fall and prefer a refund, please contact the CAS at refund@casact.org. We will also accept new registrations for the fall sitting; registration will open during the summer.

We are all experiencing an unprecedented situation that is affecting almost every part of our lives. I sincerely regret that your pathway to actuarial credentials has been temporarily disrupted with the cancellation of exams. At the same time, I’m thankful for what we do have: a valued actuarial profession that allows us to truly make a difference in society and a close-knit community of professionals who we can lean on in difficult times. We will work through the challenges before us and emerge stronger for it in the future.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to our Actuaries’ Resource Center at arc@casact.org with any questions. We will publish an FAQ in the coming days based on your questions and additional details that are not yet decided upon.

Sincerely,

Steve Armstrong
