Continuing Education Credits

The CAS Continuing Education Policy applies to all ACAS and FCAS members who provide actuarial services. Actuarial services are defined in the CAS Code of Professional Conduct as “professional services provided to a Principal by an individual acting in the capacity of an actuary. Such services include the rendering of advice, recommendations, findings or opinions based upon actuarial considerations.”

Members who are or could be subject to the continuing education requirements of a national actuarial organization can meet the requirements of the CAS Continuing Education Policy by satisfying the continuing education requirements established by a national actuarial organization recognized by the Policy.

This activity may qualify for up to 6 CE credits for the Trunk Show for CAS members. Participants should claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. CAS members earn 1 CE credit per 50 minutes of educational session time, not to include breaks or lunch.

Note: The amount of CE credit that can be earned for participating in this activity must be assessed by the individual attendee. It also may be different for individuals who are subject to the requirements of organizations other than the American Academy of Actuaries.

Professionalism
Deep Dive on the Code of Conduct 2.0

When is the last time you read the Code of Professional Conduct? In this popular repeat session format, we will take you through it Precept by Precept, in a fun, interactive session with brand new scenarios. Behaving “professionally” is not always a black-and-white exercise – we operate in many grey areas, so it's good to discuss in a group how these precepts apply in realistic situations. Our new scenarios will include many scenarios that may occur in our day-to-day work activities.

  • Kenneth Hsu, Lead Actuary, Breach Insurance

Session 3

Wildfire: Challenges and Solutions in a Shifting Paradigm

In the past 5 years, flames have blazed across the American West, particularly California, like never before. The heat is being felt by insurance carriers, homeowners, and regulators, as rates rise yet profitability suffers, igniting a need to rewrite the rulebook for wildfire in the insurance industry. Homeowners living in the wildland urban interface (WUI) are struggling to understand the best actions to take to protect their homes and communities from fire while avoiding non-renewals. In this session, we will discuss how climate change and other natural forces are exacerbating the frequency and severity of wildfire, how these changes are affecting the insurance market in California, and what fire scientists, modelers, actuaries, and community leaders are doing to balance the market and help reduce property loss.

Speakers:

  • Molly Barth, GIS Analyst, Milliman
  • Robert Lee, Actuary, Milliman
