re: SAS Update
This is an update to the SAS members. In it I would like to review some of the recent activities of the SAS, provide some insight to future events and ask for some feedback.
SAS Networking
Since our last communication, the SAS has held several events. We held a dinner at the Spring Meeting in San Diego. It was attended by about 25 members and spouses. It was a great evening in which we enjoyed good food and even better conversations. Dave Hartman was kind enough to record the event through photos which are on the SAS website. Thanks to Dave and thanks to all of the attendees for making this a great time.
We will hold a dinner at the November, 2010 meeting in Washington, DC as well. It will likely be on Monday evening. We will send the final arrangements to SAS members, so please look for the announcement. We look forward to seeing you all there.
Pat Teufel held a successful Regional Lunch for SAS members in the Hartford area. It was attended by 25 people. Based on the feedback, Pat has agreed to arrange for another such luncheon in the Fall. That luncheon will focus its attention on the Actuarial Foundation and how to so work with the actuarial community in Hartford.
We will be setting up another luncheon in New York City, we will try to set one up in Boston and will try a dinner at the CLRS in September, as well. These luncheons/dinners are a good way to reconnect with colleagues and network with other SAS professionals in an informal setting. If you have an interest in attending a Regional SAS luncheon in another area, please let us know.
International Meetings
We had great feedback on the SAS trip to the International Congress of Actuaries meeting in South Africa, thanks to the efforts of Joanne Spalla and the CAS support team. We are going to try to arrange for another trip in 2011. Among the venues we are considering are:
- IAA Council Meetings April 2011 Sydney
- IAA Council Meetings Sept. 2011 Croatia
- ASTIN Madrid, Spain — 19-22 June 2011
- ASTIN Mexico — 1-4 October 2012
Please look for further communications on this. Final selection and logistics will be sent as soon as possible, so you can plan to join us. If you have any ideas along these lines, please contact Joanne Spalla at joanne.spalla@finialre.com.
Other Activities
Many SAS members have volunteered to assist in the preparation of a history of the CAS. It isn’t surprising that many of us have lived and worked through this period. Much of this is being prepared in connection with the Centennial Meeting in 2014. If you have an interest in volunteering to assist, please contact Chuck Bryan at chuckbryan66@hotmail.com.
I would like to thank the people in the SAS leadership who have worked to make these activities possible:
Joanne Spalla, President-Elect
Pat Teufel, Secretary-Treasurer (in addition to being the CAS President-Elect candidate)
Chuck Bryan, Immediate Past PresidentPat, too, in spite of her heavy workload has devoted her usual high-level of energy to SAS. And thanks to Chuck Bryan, Dave Hartman, Alan Kaufmann and Lee Smith for their continuing interest and for providing valuable input and insights. Finally, big thanks to Cynthia, Todd Rogers and the CAS team for their help to the SAS.
As an aside, the CAS has worked hard to maintain the SAS contact list. If you know of someone who is not receiving SAS communications, please let me know.
This year promises to be another important year for the CAS if my reading of the current Presidential and Board candidates’ statements and responses is any indicator. We SAS members are an important part of the continuous evolution of this organization. We hope you will stay involved in setting the CAS direction by leveraging your knowledge and experience. Staying in touch with the key issues and voting becomes an even more important action in these times of change.
We intend to keep up the current direction and activities of the SAS. We hope you will keep your professional interests alive. Thanks for your continuing interest in and support for the SAS. As always, we need to hear from you and invite your ideas and comments. You can contact me at rfein@rifconsulting.com.
Sincerely,
Rich Fein
President, SAS
