Program Description

This two-day seminar is intended to fill a void in intermediate level reinsurance education. The program will start with a review of reinsurance structures, including a discussion of how those programs can be tailored to meet the needs of clients and the issues that some structures create for reinsurers. This presentation will also cover pricing prorata reinsurance. The next set of sessions will review excess of loss experience and exposure rating for both property and casualty. Another session will discuss methods for determining aggregate distributions, how those distributions are used to analyze loss sensitive treaty features, and the key issues encountered during this process.

The next set of sessions will review line of business specific issues and pricing approaches. Areas covered will include property catastrophe modeling, professional liability, and workers compensation. The final afternoon will include a panel discussion covering many issues faced by reinsurance pricing actuaries and a small group project, which will include a discussion of difficult issues faced by pricing actuaries and a case study.

The 2009 Casualty Actuaries in Reinsurance (CARe) Reinsurance Boot Camp on Pricing Techniques planned sessions will cover a variety of topics, including:

Continuing Education Credit

Participants should claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. CAS members earn 1 CE Credit per 50 minutes of educational session time not to include breaks and/or lunch.

The CAS Code of Professional Conduct states that, “an actuary shall perform professional services when the actuary is qualified to do so and meets applicable qualification standards.” The American Academy of Actuaries (AAA) establishes qualification standards for public statements of actuarial opinion in the United States of America. Those standards require that actuaries update and maintain knowledge of applicable principles of actuarial science and actuarial standards of practice and their satisfaction through continuing education. The AAA publication Qualification Standards for Prescribed Statements of Actuarial Opinion provides a complete list of guidelines concerning continuing education. Actuaries attending a CAS seminar to satisfy AAA requirements should review all guidelines in that publication.
