Disney World To Host CAS Spring Meeting
by David Spiegler
The 1999 CAS Spring Meeting will be held May 16-19 at the Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
The featured speaker is Lawrence Kudlow, the chief economist and director of research at American Skandia Life Assurance, Inc. Mr. Kudlow is a regular commentator on CNBC and a weekly columnist for Bloomberg News. He's also a regular op-ed contributor to the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Times. Mr. Kudlow served as associate director for economics and planning at the Office of Management and Budget during the Reagan Administration, and as co-chairperson of the Economic Recovery Council in New Jersey during Governor Whitman's first election campaign. He is a frequent speaker and expert witness on economic matters.
Four general sessions are being planned. "The European Union's Impact on the Insurance Industry" will discuss the expected impact of the common currency and regulation among eleven European countries. A second general session, "Chief Actuary Panel on Market Behavior," will focus on the dynamics of the current marketplace and P/C insurers' reactions to it.
The remaining two general sessions will be presented concurrently. One panel will address the looming "Year 2000" timeline. Aspects including the current status and predictions of outcomes on policy coverage issues will be discussed. The other session, "Financial Markets and their Impact on the P/C Industry," will consider the interactions between various financial service providers, including insurers, investment banks, commercial banks, and brokerages.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to hear presentations on Proceedings papers and on the call paper program, "Securitization of Risk." The Michelbacher Prize will be presented to the best paper submitted in response to this call.
New concurrent sessions will include "The Future of Auto Insurance," "Actuaries in Nontraditional Roles," "Specialty Markets," "New AssociatesPath to Fellowship," "The Coming Turbulence in the Workers Compensation Market," and "Impact of New Exam Structure."
Optional golf and tennis tournaments will be held Tuesday afternoon. On Tuesday evening, weather permitting, members and guests are invited to an outdoor theme party by the water.
More detailed information on the CAS 1999 Spring Meeting will soon be mailed to members.
