Award Winners Honored in Toronto

Winners of CAS Annual Awards and the American Risk and Insurance Association (ARIA) Prize were honored at the CAS Business Session, which was held November 9 during the 1998 Annual Meeting in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Richard H. Snader was awarded the Matthew Rodermund Service Award for his significant volunteer contributions to the actuarial profession. A Fellow since 1971, Snader has served on several CAS committees including Long Range Planning, Education and Testing Models, and most recently as a member of the Task Force for the Review of the Disciplinary Process and the Disciplinary Committee. He also served as vice chair of the Examination Committee and a director on the CAS Board.

Donald F. Mango won the 1998 Woodward-Fondiller Prize for his paper, "An Application of Game Theory: Property Catastrophe Risk Load."

Rodney E. Kreps was awarded the 1998 CAS Dorweiler Prize for his paper, "Investment-Equivalent Reinsurance Pricing." Both Kreps' and Mango's papers will be published in the 1998 edition of the Proceedings and can be found on the CAS Web Site at www.casact.org/library/98sprmtg.htm.

Gene C. Lai, Robert C. Witt, Hung-Gay Fung, and Richard D. MacMinn were named the first recipients of the newly established CAS Online Services Prize for "On Liability Insurance Crises," a paper in portable document format with links to a Web page with animated graphics.

James A. Tilley, Ph.D. was named recipient of the 1998 Hachemeister Prize for his paper, "The Securitization of Catastrophic Property Risks."

ARIA Prize winners, Joan Lamm-Tennant and Mary A. Weiss, presented their paper, "International Insurance Cycles: Rational Expectations/Institutional Intervention," in a session during the CAS Annual Meeting.
