By Patrick B. Woods, Chairperson, CAS Program
Planning Committee
Phoenix, Arizona, the Valley of the Sun is a perfect setting for the
CAS 2005 Spring Meeting! Beginning Sunday May 15 and running through
Wednesday May 18, the meeting will provide opportunities for continuing
education, with sessions covering a variety of current, relevant, and
important actuarial topics. Ample time will be available for informal
discussion and even some relaxation under the desert sun. The meeting
site is the Pointe South Mountain Resort, a Triple A, four-Diamond, and
all-suite resort nestled at the base of the South Mountain Preserve.
In a change from previous CAS meetings, we are initiating the first in
a series of speakers from among the leaders of the industry. Our
featured speaker will be Ron Pressman president and CEO of GE
Insurance, and chairman, president, and CEO of GE Insurance Solutions,
one of the world's largest reinsurance and insurance organizations.
Pressman has also been included for the third time on Insurance
Newscast's list of the 100 most powerful people in the insurance
industry. His speech will focus on the challenges that he sees as
crucial to the P&C insurance business and the actuarial profession.
In addition to raising these challenges he will suggest avenues and
directions for meeting these challenges.
Four general sessions will delve into current areas of interest to
casualty actuaries, including
- Actuarial Accountability - In a Changing World
- The Industry's Ability to Attract Capital Given Historically Low ROE
- The Actuarial Role in Mergers and Acquisitions
- The Future of Finite Insurance
Among the concurrent sessions planned are
sessions on
- managing the insurance cycle
- construction defects
- data
privacy
- the actuary's relationship with the underwriter
- predictive
modeling
- the changing landscape in personal auto insurance.
Papers
on enterprise risk management, submitted in response to a call for
papers, will be presented in concurrent sessions. In addition, an
exhibit area will allow attendees the chance to interact with company
representatives to discuss their products and services.
The meeting will also provide a casual atmosphere for networking with
actuaries working on similar projects, catching-up with old colleagues,
and just simply relaxing. The schedule for attendees and accompanying
persons includes two receptions and a Western barbecue. The CAS will
also be sponsoring the 22nd annual CAS Scramble Golf
Tournament. The Tournament will be held on the Phantom Horse Golf Club,
which winds through the foothills behind the resort.
The Pointe South Mountain Resort offers something for everyone—serene
walks amid mountain views, sunbathing at poolside; an exciting water
park for thrill seekers; six restaurants to satisfy even the most
discriminating diner; a spa for rejuvenation; and golf, swimming,
tennis, horse-back riding, hiking and biking for active participants.
