It's a Puzzlement
Orienting Bottles
by John P. Robertson![]()
You are blindfolded and seated before a square rotating table, which has a bottle at each of the four corners. Each bottle may be upright or inverted. Your job is to orient all four bottles the same way. Here's what you are allowed to do. You can call out "adjacent" or "opposite." If you call "adjacent," someone will rotate the table and guide your hands to two bottles at adjacent corners, like home plate and first base. You can feel whether the bottles are upright or inverted, and you can change or not change the orientation of either or both bottles. If you call "opposite," the table will be rotated and your hands will be guided to two bottles at opposite corners, like home plate and second base. Again, you can change the orientation of neither, one, or both bottles. The person rotating the table can see the orientation of each bottle, but is not necessarily trying to help you succeed. You can ask for "adjacent" or "opposite" as many times as you want. What is your strategy?
