Program Overview

We have a featured speaker for the Spring BACE meeting, Mark Nigrini of West Virginia University. Mark is an expert in the use of analytics in forensic accounting.

The Fingerprints of Fraud Numbers: Blue’s Clues for Auditors
Mark Nigrini, PhD, West Virginia University

Certain fraud schemes requires the perpetrator to invent dollar amounts to carry out the scheme. These fraudulent amounts or events are then processed by the accounting system and become a part of an accounting database. This presentation will review the types of fraud numbers with informative and interesting examples of frauds that have used the various types of numbers. For example, we will discuss the round numbers used in the $48 million Harriette Walters fraud against the District of Columbia. The presentation will include examples of large and suspicious outlier numbers and the issues that prevent new auditors from seeing numbers as being outliers, suspicious, or fraudulent. Other topics that will be covered include the use of these fraud fingerprints to detect fraud through data analytics, why early detection is important (the answer here is not so obvious), what fraud numbers are not, and strategies for computer assisted fraud detection audits.

Additional planned sessions for the Spring BACE meeting include:
