Second Exposure Draft of the CAS Continuing Education Policy
11/16/2009 —
The CAS Board of Directors has authorized the release of this Second Exposure Draft of the CAS Continuing Education Policy.
The CAS Board first reviewed a proposed CAS Continuing Education Policy at its September 2008 meeting and authorized release of an Exposure Draft. The Board would like to thank members who took the time to comment on that Exposure Draft. In response to comments received from the first Exposure Draft, the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Task Force made substantive revisions to its original recommendations and presented the revised draft to the Board.
At its May 3, 2009 meeting, consistent with the recommendation of the CPD Task Force, the CAS Board approved a motion that all CAS members, with limited exceptions, should be subject to Continuing Education (CE) requirements. After dismissing the Task Force with thanks, the Board charged the Executive Council with developing a Second Exposure Draft of the CAS Continuing Education Policy for consideration by the Board. The CAS Board again reviewed the proposed CAS Continuing Education Policy at its November 2009 meeting and authorized the release of this second Exposure Draft.
The CAS Board believes that continuing professional education is an integral part of any profession. It believes that the proposed CAS Continuing Education Policy represents a significant milestone in ensuring that CAS members stay accountable to their principals by maintaining appropriate levels of relevant Continuing Education.
Members and other interested parties are now invited to participate in the process by submitting comments on the second Exposure Draft. Comments will be received for a thirty day period, until December 15, 2009. All comment letters will be considered by the CAS Board, and revisions may be made to the proposed policy based on the comments. Barring comments necessitating extensive revision or further exposure, the CAS Board expects to adopt the proposed CAS Continuing Education Policy effective January 1, 2011, to be applicable to Actuarial Services rendered on or after January 1, 2012.
Alternatively, written comments may be sent via email to Sue Grossi at the CAS Office (sgrossi@casact.org). Finally, written comments may be mailed to: Casualty Actuarial Society; Att: CAS CE Policy; 4350 N. Fairfax Drive, Suite 250; Arlington, Virginia 22203 so that they are received no later than December 15, 2009. Comments received subsequent to December 15, 2009 will not be considered.
In closing, I would like to thank you in advance for your consideration and observations regarding this important policy document.
Roger Hayne
CAS President-Elect
