Your frustration with the endless ratio plethora is thoroughly justified, particularly at the end of April. In defense of ratios: A good, comprehensive combination of the "right" ratios (ratios containing the right ingredients in the top & bottom, and suitably conceptualized from the start) can provide a lot of relevant information in a very compact form. Key ratios can often reveal why a business is performing poorly or well, and each type of business (including insurance) has its own set of key ratios (all this is according to the business books I've read). - David Ruhm
