I am about 1/4 of the way through the material. I am also trying to work
out some problems from each paper before going on to the next one. Right
at the beginning, I created a sheet detailing the time I am allotting for
each paper, based on # of pages and # of points. This way, I can tell if I
am putting too much time into a paper and need to move on, and I also don't
feel so bad when, for example, I take 4 hours to go through a paper and
work out some problems, because I can see that I have 8 hours allotted to
that paper.

Just reading through the material doesn't work for me, because I don't
really learn any of it just by a cursory reading, and I find that the
second time through I have forgotten everything! So my goal for the first
reading is at least partial mastery. And as I said above, I know that it
is ok for me to take the time now because I can see how much total time I
have allotted for each paper.
