Re: [CAS] Request for Input: Ideas on the CAS Election Process

WOW, this got hot real fast.

I believe that all elections ought to include summary positions on 3-5 key
issues being faced by the CAS at the time of the election. I was Vice
Chairman of the Examination Committee at the time exam partitioning was
implemented. And in my opinion, the facts were completely ignored, and the
board acted with autonomy. I believe the CAS membership and candidacy both
deserved better.

I would not suggest elections for Executive Director or for Vice
Presidents, for the same reason that stockholders don't have elections for
the key officers in the corporate world.

As one who has actually counted ballots, I am concerned about the very low
number of votes that can actually qualify a board member's election. About
half the members vote, and most ballots have fewer than four candidates
marked. The result is that you can be elected with less than 30% stated
endorsement from the voters, or less than 15% stated endorsement from the
membership. These numbers seem too low to me.
