Stan, thanks for the encouragement. Gee, I thought I did start such a =
thread. I don't know exactly where to draw the line on "profession-wide" =
issues, but certainly partitioning and mutual recognition qualify. =
Frankly, I agree with Barry Z. from yesterday in his comments that the =
average member has the opinion that the workings of the CAS are of little =
relevance to his/her work. This is both good and bad.

Another two cents for you: I recently was a panelist at a CAS Professionali=
sm course for budding ACAS's. The whole lot of them were very willing to =
bend any rule to evade regulatory scrutiny and/or please the client. =
Where do they learn this? The apple is not even off the tree and already =
it is rotten. The voice of restraint came from the consultants on the =
panel, and most strongly from our featured speaker. I relate this event =
to the election discussion by thinking that members are free to do =
anything they like, so who cares who is president of the CAS until he/she =
tries to enforce or change the rules? What has been the biggest debate =
this year besides mutual recognition? Guidelines vs. rules.

The recent reserving "contest" at the CLRS is a good educational tool. =
How can the actuaries be all over the place in analyzing the same =
information? I think many folks don't see a lot of work by other =
actuaries. Couple that with an "passing exams makes me God" attitude and =
it is no wonder professionalism is debated in Canada.

Stan, I agree with you. The election thing is just the tip of the =
iceberg. Hopefully, the trend will remain positive.
