It is definitely NOT my position that "that everyone who is elected is really=20=
not elected but appointed/annointed" as you contend=2E Rather my position is=20=
simply a reflection of fact that there is no contested election for=20=
president-elect or for any election at all of the vice presidents ("anointed"=20=
and "appointed" respectively)=2E =20=

I believe board elections are free, open, and contested=2E It is clear that=20=
nominations are open and welcome and in fact there have been board nominees who=20=
were not picked by the nominating committee=2E =20=

I cannot say I have seen that recently for president=2E The fact that the=20=
nominating committee definitely does not want competition (if they did, why not=20=
nominate two candidates?) for president I would consider the president=20=
"anointed" by our current procedure=2E In addition the CAS members are not even=20=
given the chance to vote on vice presidents, much less have a contested=20=
election=2E

As to problems, I think I already pointed one out in my initial memo --=20=
partitioining of exams=2E It seems clear that the voice of the membership was=20=
not listened to with the result of many years of partitioning with the=20=
corresponding pain of "reunification" being experienced by students currently=20=
in transition=2E I am not saying that a more democratic CAS would have prevented=
=20=
it, but we would have had more input=2E

What is "broken" is the fact that significant decisions that affect all CAS=20=
members are being made by appointed leaders without any real responsibility to=20=
the membership and without the consent of the membership=2E I am not saying any=20=
of the current leadership is "bad," only that the members have really had=20=
little or no voice in their elevation=2E

We should have nothing to fear in making the selection of our leaders more the=20=
responsibility of our members and not just that of the board and the nominating=20=
committee=2E

As for executive director, at this point I am not proposing election, but since=20=
you put on the table, what do the other members think?=20=

For the record, I think response below is from Stan Khury=2E =20=

For the benefit of the membership, and Stan forgive me if I get this wrong, but=20=
it is my understanding you were largely responsible for designing the current=20=
structure during your term as president=2E

Roger=2E

You want discussion=2E=2E=2E=2E and that is what you will get=2E

I read your notes with intetest=2E I understand all of your observations and=20=
what you would like to see happen with putting up most of the positions of=20=
responsibility for election=2E

So, to kick off the discussion, I temporarily will assume your position that=20=
everyone who is elected is really not elected but appointed/annointed, and=20=
would like to ask you, what is it that is broken that you would like to see=20=
fixed? Is the condition we assume, that some people are appointed/annointed,=20=
a prpoblem by itself? Are the appointed/annointed people
doing a bad job when a better job could be done by elected people? Are some=20=
deserving people getting overlooked by this appointment/annointment process? =20=
Or is it something else=2E I think it would help this discussion if you would=20=
identify the problems (or the consequences of the problems) you see with the=20=
current set up=2E=2E=2E=2E=2E

Regards

Stan=2E
PS=2E While we are at it, would you want the executive director position up=20=
for election? And if not, why not?
