Mathematics Department
ACTUARIAL SCIENCE FACULTY/DIRECTOR POSITION
The Mathematics Department at Illinois State University is seeking
applications for a tenure track faculty position in Actuarial Science
beginning August 16, 2000.
Qualifications: Candidates are expected to be Associates or Fellows of
either the Society of Actuaries or the Casualty Actuarial Society. Several
years of work experience in the actuarial field is highly desirable. A
Ph.D. in Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, or actuarial-related area by
August 2000 is desirable. Experience and ability to provide leadership for
the actuarial science program are required. The minimum requirements are a
master's degree or an Associate in either the SOA or CAS. A Ph.D. or a
Fellowship designation is required for tenure.
Responsibilities. The person selected will be expected to assume direction
of the actuarial program, to teach courses related to actuarial science, to
pursue research and professional involvement in actuarial science, and to
provide curricular leadership in actuarial science. Refereed research
publications, quality teaching and professional involvement are required
for tenure
Rank and Salary. Rank is at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.
Salary is competitive depending on qualifications and experience.
Department and Programs. The Department of Mathematics is located in the
College of Arts and Sciences. It offers Bachelor's and Master's programs in
Mathematics and Mathematics Education, and a Ph.D. program in Mathematics
Education. The Department offers a sequence in actuarial science including
the following courses related to actuarial science: Theory of Interest,
Introduction to Life Contingencies, the Analysis of Time Series,
Credibility Theory and Loss Distributions, and some exam preparation
courses. In addition there are supporting statistics courses. The
Department has about 240 majors, 75 M.S. students in Mathematics or
Mathematics Education and the equivalent of 48 full-time positions. The
university also houses the Katie School of Insurance in the College of

state-supported multi-purpose institution home of 20,000 students located
in Bloomington-Normal in central Illinois. Bloomington-Normal, the
corporate headquarters for State Farm Insurance, is a fast-growing

easily accessible by three interstate highways, Amtrak, and several
commercial airlines.
