Pet Insurance

When I was a youngster (soon to be in the middle of a previous century), pets
got older and had to be "put to sleep". Children learned important lessons
about dealing with death in the family. Nowadays, when pets get older, our
children learn about how they need lots of special care and many thousands of
dollars of veterinary bills.

Pet insurance may actually be an exciting realm for actuaries. Diagnostic and
clinical procedure capabilities have expanded and become more accepted, so
costs and utilization must have increased much more dramatically in the past
decade than for human health care. I encourage this Phil Panther (yes, he
really is listed among students in the CAS Yearbook) to write a discussion
paper about how he keeps up with the costs and coverages for this innovative
product.
