I once rented cross-country ski equipment at a place which supplied a
finely-printed form you had to sign before renting equipment- it absolved
them from liability for any reason, including failure to maintain the
equipment! I agree that it would never stand up in court- they put it
there on the off-chance that a potential claimant can be discouraged after
being reminded that they signed the form.
As for boilerplate on e-mails- I once e-mailed an actuary in an area I was
about to visit asking about the local weather. His reply, from the server
of a Big 6 firm, included the full boilerplate about it being a
confidential communication.
