DIRECTOR OF THE AMERICAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITIONS (AMC)
of the
MATHEMATICAL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA

The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) is seeking
candidates for the position of Director, American Mathematics
Competitions (AMC). The AMC administers a series of mathematics
competitions for middle school and secondary school students, and
trains a U.S. team to compete in the International Mathematical
Olympiad. The AMC is sponsored by the MAA and nine other
mathematical
sciences organizations.
The Director heads a branch office of the MAA on the campus
of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He/she is responsible for
the
smooth operation of the competitions program, including preparation
of
test items, compilation of tests, promotional activities, mailings
of
test packets to participating schools, and grading of exams.
Several
committees and a regional network of AMC representatives help with
various elements of the competitions program. The AMC Director
reports to the MAA Executive Director at MAA Headquarters in
Washington, DC.
Candidates should have at least a Master's degree in the
mathematical sciences, and expertise in technical and leadership
areas, including finance, personnel, and working with volunteers.
Experience in problem-solving and mathematical competitions is
highly
desirable.
The start date for the position is negotiable, but should be
no later than September 1998. A part-time faculty appointment
and/or
project work in the Mathematics Department at UNL may be
negotiated.
