You can find the article online at

http://www.uncg.edu/student.groups/fencing/AmericanFencing/articles/43_3_16.html

There is also an earlier article online at

http://www.uncg.edu/student.groups/fencing/AmericanFencing/articles/42_4_25.html
This one is fairly short and contains only an overview (no numbers).
However, it also contains several references to articles from medical
and sports journals.

For what it's worth, competitive fencing is a martial art in the same
vein as kendo.
The sport also contains certain inherent dangers not faced in other
sports. How many other sports compete with the sole intent of
simulating the act of impaling someone with a lethal weapon?

However, because of the inherent danger of the sport, fencing goes to
extremes with safety attire such as masks and ballistic nylon jackets.
A competitive fencer may spend close to $1,000 on protective clothing
alone. Protective clothing designed solely to stop the penetration of a
small pointed weapon. This may seem excessive until you have seen that
same small pointed weapon shoved completely through a 1x10 board.

Anyway, good luck with the articles. Past experience has taught me
that discussions such as you are having tend to end up with everyone
agreeing to disagree.

If you need anything else, please email me directly. I thing our
discussion is getting a bit off the track of this discussion forum and
don't want to bore/annoy the other members.
