Not quite.

Viruses can't be transmitted by plaintext email. Reading a normal
email message in a normal email program is safe.

Viruses *can* be transmitted through attachments (see the recent virus
problems at NASA and on the Mir space station for an example). A
person should use extreme care before launching an attachment from an
unknown source.

It is also theoretically possible (I don't believe it's happened yet)
that HTML (WWW) formatted email, when read in Netscape's or MSIE's mail
programs, can open a "back door" for your system for a virus or other
malicious program.

Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean that someone's not out to
get you. ;)
