There is an actuarial opening at INSTRAT, the analytical arm of a
reinsurance intermediary. Our primary activity is risk analysis and
amelioration. Candidates must have a statistical bent of mind, and
preferably be statistically literate. There is considerable model
building and running of existing software, so Excel and Word are a
necessity and programming is strongly desirable. In addition to
reinsurance, we are involved in various innovative financial
arrangements so financial and/or economics knowledge is helpful. The
candidate must be able to work largely self-directed.

Our clients are typically small insurance companies, so knowledge of the
behavior of primary insurance lines is important. Good intuitions and
skepticism about input data are needed. Because there is much client
contact, it is also important that the candidate be able to speak and
listen easily to non-statistical persons and to be able to communicate
clearly and effectively. An essential part of our job is the
translation of business intuition into mathematics, turning a
mathematical crank, and translating the results back into business
language.

We have a budget of $45K, but could go higher for the right person.
